Little Things
By Claudy Jean Baptiste | SLM Haiti Director
Often we try to show our love for the Lord by doing great things like building a school in poor countries, helping needy children in an orphanage, and even giving a lot of money to the church. To lead the flock of the Lord is not only to do these great things that can show our generosity or at least our presence in passing. Carrying the flock of the Lord requires even more to meet those most insignificant responsibilities where no one would know, except our God who sees us in secret places.
When we look back on our lives, we quickly understand how God uses our most ordinary actions to bring souls to Him.
The conversion story of Jean Louis Wilterson is indisputable proof that God uses little things to save His children and make them ready for service. Wilterson is a young Haitian from Hinche in the Central Department of Haiti. His parents were voodoo worshipers and his father was a hougan (sorcerer) especially. After the death of his father, Wilterson was claimed by the spirits to continue the mystical work in his family. That’s how he came to live a life of debauchery in alcohol, games of chance, sex, and doing mystical ceremonies to harm other people. Wilterson had a hatred for Christians. He made threats against Christians and even searched for proof to show them that God does not exist. Wilterson had lost all good manners to the extent that he seemed to be a person beyond help and beyond hope of ever changing (Mark 5:1–20).
At the time everything was lost for Wilterson, God sent his way Charles Himler, an associate school director of Source of Light, to give him a Bible lesson. Wilterson started studying.
“As I began to do these lessons,” he said of New Life in Jesus Christ, “I felt a transformation in life. I now know the origin of sin and I know that Jesus died for me. I am in the great family of God and Satan does not have power over me. This is how Christ changed my life through the Bible lessons of Source of Light. I am now sharing and teaching the messages of these lessons to people in my community. I thank God for saving me and putting Source of Light on my path to salvation. I am an evangelist now, by the grace of God, through the lessons of Source of Light.”
We attended Wilterson’s Source of Light graduation in Hinche last July. We glorify God for using our simple gestures to bring forth faith, growth, and maturity. The power of the Spirit of God leads people to Christ. Our responsibility is to continue to feed God’s flock by teaching SLM courses wherever we can. God works and changes lives through our little things like giving a Bible lesson to someone. Little things count, in God’s eyes. They can contribute to the salvation of a person through Jesus Christ.
